Celebrating the Luxury of Mohair: The Diamond Fibre Collections Launch at SAFW SS21

The Diamond Fibre Collections is an initiative led by the South Africa Mohair Cluster (SAMC) in partnership with SAFW. The initiative began through a call to applicants, whereby 20 talented South African designers were nominated by recognised fashion leaders, and a panel of experienced judges selected the top 3 designers.

Local design studios Lukhanyo Mdingi, Judith Atelier and MmusoMaxwell were selected to take part in the Diamond Fibre Collections, a never-before-seen collection of designer fashion that celebrates the versatility and luxury of mohair.

This initiative was started by the SAMC to not only highlight the versatile nature of the fibre, but to build the local mohair sector to drive access to both local and international markets – while tapping into the creativity that exists within the South African fashion design sector.  The designers received substantial support over the course of 12 months, playing to their individual strengths to create beautiful collections that celebrate mohair and the wealth of talent we have in South Africa.  Incorporating mohair and mohair blends, the collections debuted at SA Fashion Week in October 2020.

Now, off the back of the success of The Diamond Fibre Collections SS20, we are proud to announce that the designers will be returning to SAFW for the 2nd season to present their brand-new SS21 collections.

With each studio once again playing to their specific skills and talents, the collections promise to be bolder and more refined than last year. Unique experimentations with textiles, celebrations of community and culture, and beautifully tailored garments are all to be expected from these rapidly rising talents of the South African designer fashion scene.

Lukhanyo Mdingi’s Coutts’ Collection pays a refined homage to Nicholas Coutts, the renowned designer known for his hand-woven tapestries and textiles. Judith Atelier’s The Kwanzaa (Nguzo Saba) Collection sees soft, flowing pieces that accentuate the female form in Judith’s signature style. MmusoMaxwell’s new collection comprises a renewed focus on carefully structured and tailored pieces that complement the modern women.

The Diamond Fibre Collections SS21 will be launching at SA Fashion Week on 30th of April in the virtual fashion event of the season. The live stream is only available to those who purchase a ticket, so get yours now to make sure you don’t miss out!
