March 2020 Newsletter

This newsletter aims to bring you up to speed on some of the positive developments that have taken place during a busy beginning to the year.

An opportunity to partner with some of South Africa’s finest design talent has been identified through a collaboration with SA Fashion Week. While the programme is ultimately designer-led, the focus will be to utilise their collections to drive increased mohair conversion locally, through value chain and market development.

SAMC & SA Fashion Week launched a competition that began with a Call for Applicants sent to 20 South African designers who have been nominated by recognised local fashion leaders, with the objective being to select 3 winning designers.

The judging criteria focussed primarily on designer experience, commercial viability and how the designers utilised mohair within their collections. The judging panel, consisting of David West – Head of Design at Superbalist; Annette Pringle – partner in the Fashion Agent and also Fashion Design Consultant; Alessandra Della Morte – Fashion Consultant (Italy); Eddie Marquez – Fashion Brand Consultant (USA) and Lindsay Humphreys – General Manager of Mohair South Africa scored the entries against the judging criteria outlined for the competition.

Winning designers will receive support over the course of the next 12 months, including contribution to raw materials, the opportunity to showcase their collections at two SA Fashion Week season shows, collection planning and marketing support right through to potential agent representation.

The winning designers are:

These designers now have just 8 weeks to develop samples to showcase at the SA Fashion Week  Spring/Summer show!

The SAMC team, alongside a handful of industry experts will work towards understanding the designer’s vision and then partnering them with manufacturing companies and suppliers that can bring their collections to life.

Down the line the focus will be to establish commercial channels and markets through local and international representation.

A General Annual meeting attended by 22 sector stakeholders, took place on the 13th February 2020 in Port Elizabeth. Stakeholders provided inputs regarding the collective strategies of SAMC, MSA and the R-CTFL Masterplan 2030 and nominated a Steercom structure and members. The meeting was well attended and the inputs valuable.

We will share another update on our progress soon.
